Periodontal Treatments

Gum disease leads to soft tissues in the mouth becoming swollen, sore or infected. This can result in bad breath. If untreated, the early stage of gum disease, known as gingivitis, can develop into a more advanced condition, periodontitis, which affects the gums and also the bone supporting your teeth.

The first sign is usually bleeding of the gums caused by plaque, a build-up of a soft substance on your teeth. Plaque mainly consists of bacteria, feeding on the sugars in your mouth from the food you eat and liquids you drink. Calculus, or tartar, is then produced by the hardened form of plaque, which accumulates and is much more difficult to remove.

Specialist cleaning and treatment of the affected gums can help avoid more serious complications, such as tooth loss or shrinkage of the jawbone.
